The proposed introduction of .AU domains has become a divisive subject amongst Australian business owners. While the Australian Domain Administrator (auDA) extols the benefits of such changes, industry experts like Jim Stewart have become vocal opponents on the subject. In this session, Jim will talk about the proposed introduction of .AU domains, the lack of support from private and corporate domain owners, the risks it will introduce to business and how to minimise them, and whether it’s time to stop investing in .com.au. In this session you will learn:

  • Why the introduction of .AU will be bad for business.
  • Why auDA values your brand at $50.
  • The myriad of technical issues and the confusion it will cause.
  • The real cost of registering .AU.
  • Why .com.au domains registered after April 2016 are worth less than those registered before.
  • How you can have your say in the matter.
  • The lessons to be learned from other countries that have travelled this road.

Note: Spotlight Sessions are open to all Big Digital attendees, including Bootcamp ticket holders.

17/3/18 – The Facebook Apocalypse stepped up a notch as news of the Cambridge Analytica scandal broke and ordinary users began to understand the breadth of the data held by the social media giant.

So how do businesses engage with their audience on Facebook and what is the underlying psychology and motivators to engaging your audience as the new Algorithm rolls out? Kara Lambert will show you what’s changed and why in this session.

We also posed the question to Kara on how the latest scandal and the public’s reaction might affect your Facebook ad strategy and results in the future.

We build websites, we do marketing, but for crying out loud… will somebody think about the children… of the internet!? That’s you, that’s your mum, that’s the guy next door who likes pizza and Call of Duty (a lot), that’s the dentist who you see less often than you should. It’s everyone we’re trying to reach on the other side of an internet connection.

After another year of poring over the transcripts, he’s assembled a podcast where he teaches his smart-alecky A.I. assistant, Bobby Bot, about what digital empathy is.

  • learn more about cyber criminals, how they are targeting small enterprises and why

Sometimes there’s more to making sites function well and meet the needs of customers and search engines than meets the eye.

Sometimes we hear terminology, read blog posts, and think a lot of it doesn’t really matter to us. But if you’re going to do business online in 2018 you definitely need to understand what’s important to search engines, and here in Australia that means you need to get to know Google.

In this session Google’s own Gary Illyes explains two of those mysterious “H” terms you might have not quite come to grips with yet.

You’ll learn:

  • What is HTTPS?
    • How does it work
    • What does it do
    • Why is it important to Google?
  • What is hreflang?
    • Why do we use it?
    • How does it work?
    • Why is it the preferred way of serving language-specific content to users?

Just a quick snack break this time around – fuel up for a Spotlight on eCommerce and then a chance to have your own site reviewed in our final session Live Site Review Panel!

We’ll announce the winner or #MozQuiz, then take a few minutes to wrap up the conference, thank our speakers and let you know where you can hang out for last chats and Goodbyes after conference!

A Brand New Era: SEO 2018

While strong technical SEO should still be the cornerstone of any successful website, 2018 will see a shift in the paradigm of digital marketing towards a greater user experience and brand-biased search results.

So what does this mean for your existing SEO efforts? Should you even bother to expend resources improving “old-school” SEO? Are you confused about what brand means for your business?

Learn how brand building and improving your site’s user experience will propel you in the Google rankings.

In this session you will learn:
  • Why you should be focused on these business building metrics.
  • The importance of brand in the era of voice search.
  • How to dominate your competition by building your brand.
  • How to measure your brand strength against your competitors.
  • How to improve search traffic with easy to implement systems.
  • How to create formidable rankings with these website fundamentals and how to monitor them.

“Blogging” seems like a fairly straightforward way to promote your business – at least if you just think about the mechanics of setting “writing stuff on the internet”, but many a blogger has started out on their blogging adventure and found themselves devastated and dissillusioned 6 months later.

As with everything else in business, building a blog that adds value to your business takes planning, commitment, and a clear understanding of the business goal it serves.

In this session Elissa will guide you through the process of creating a content strategy, and how to make it work for your business, whether it’s just you or even a small team responsible for “blogging”.

You’ll learn:

  • How to build a content calendar for your business
  • How to use your content calendar to manage content development within a small team.
